Creative livelihoods
Digital rails that let artists, crafters and community hosts sell their work on their own terms.
Why it matters
Artists, crafters and community hosts often sell through platforms they do not control, which take a large share and keep the customer. Talent is not the gap; the route to market is.
What we are doing
A storefront where makers sell directly, with their own admin and a fair commission, built on the same commerce engine that community tour hosts already use to sell experiences. When makers own their route to market, more of the value stays in the community.
Stage: A storefront for local artists and makers is in build, with its first artist agreed in October 2026. No poverty-reduction outcome is claimed yet.
What the technology does
Described at the level of what it does, not how it is built. Methods, models and data stay private until their owners decide how to protect and share them.
- A makers' storefront with its own admin, so the artist controls listings and prices
- One commerce engine shared across artists and hosts, so each new storefront costs less
- Sales records that belong to the maker
- Consent recorded before any artist, work or story is published
The ALOODA path for this programme
Every Uthando programme runs on the same standard operating procedure: six steps and a confidence gate before anything is acted on or published. Read the ALOODA white paper.
- AAttention
Makers lose value to platforms they do not control.
- LListening
Artists, crafters and hosts, on how they sell today and what they would change.
- OObserve
What a storefront costs to run, and what makers keep from each sale.
- OOrient
The maker owns the shop, the customer and the story.
- DDecide
Start with one artist, reuse a proven engine, and keep terms simple.
- 95The 95% gate
No income or poverty claim until sales are measured.
- AAct
Launch the first storefront, then open it to more makers through the mission.
From proof to scale, gate by gate
Nothing moves to the next stage until its gate is passed and evidenced. Honest about where it stands today.
Prove
Show that the problem is real and the approach works: research, a prototype, ethics approvals and first evidence.
Gate: The core claim passes the ALOODA 95% gate.
Pilot
Run it with real people in one setting, under a written agreement, against a baseline.
Gate: Pilot results are verified and every safeguard has worked in practice.
Blueprint
Write the model down so others can run it: the SOP, data standard, training, costs, legal checklist and licence terms.
Gate: An independent partner runs it from the blueprint alone.
Scale
Replicate through partners across sites and countries, under each country's law and with local consent.
Gate: A local compliance check passes before each new country.
Next gate for this programme: The first storefront live, with measured sales.
The rules this programme follows
- Artists keep copyright in their work; any licence is in writing (Copyright Act).
- Artists and their work shown only with their permission.
- Clear terms of sale and refunds before any online sale (ECT Act and Consumer Protection Act).
- No poverty-reduction claim until it is measured.
