Research, built to be checked.
Seven programmes across soil, fish, field trials, schools, working animals and creative work. Each one has an impact standard, a pathway from proof to scale, and a dated evidence trail. We publish what we can stand behind, and protect what is not ours to share.
Because love is action.
Uthando means love. The people doing the most important work in Africa, in classrooms, on farms, in conservation and in communities, are often the least resourced, and the tools that would help them are usually built, priced and owned somewhere else.
Uthando builds those tools here, hands them over, and publishes the evidence, so the work can be checked, trusted and continued by others. The research below is that same commitment applied to new problems: start with attention and listening, prove it, then write it down so it can grow beyond any one person.
Being careful is part of the care. That is why every programme names its stage honestly, shows its safeguards, and keeps partners' ideas, data and names private until they choose otherwise.
Where the work stands today
Anonymised by design: no partner, client, funder or university is named until they agree, and no method or data is published. Stages are stated plainly, from proposal to pilot.
Soil health, read by its smallest animals
AI-assisted microscopy to read the nematode communities that signal how healthy a soil is.
Read the programme →FishVision: fish health, checked with a phone
An offline screening tool that looks at a photo of a fish and says when to take a closer look.
Read the programme →AgriTrials: field trials that hold up
A trial-data platform that keeps every treatment, control and measurement checkable from field to report.
Read the programme →STREAMS: the living classroom
Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics and Sustainability, taught through a working food system.
Read the programme →Schools as living classrooms
Aquaponics systems, sensors and teacher resources that turn schools into places to learn science, maths and enterprise.
Read the programme →People and working animals
Research support for courses and studies on how people and working animals affect each other's wellbeing.
Read the programme →Creative livelihoods
Digital rails that let artists, crafters and community hosts sell their work on their own terms.
Read the programme →One standard, from idea to scale
Every programme follows the ALOODA impact SOP, then moves through four stages. Each stage ends in a gate that must be evidenced before the next begins.
Prove
Show that the problem is real and the approach works: research, a prototype, ethics approvals and first evidence.
Gate: The core claim passes the ALOODA 95% gate.
Pilot
Run it with real people in one setting, under a written agreement, against a baseline.
Gate: Pilot results are verified and every safeguard has worked in practice.
Blueprint
Write the model down so others can run it: the SOP, data standard, training, costs, legal checklist and licence terms.
Gate: An independent partner runs it from the blueprint alone.
Scale
Replicate through partners across sites and countries, under each country's law and with local consent.
Gate: A local compliance check passes before each new country.
What anyone can read
The problem, the approach, the stage, the safeguards, and dated records that show the work exists.
What partners can see
Outcomes and evidence summaries, shared with funders and partners who ask, without methods or raw data.
What is protected
Methods, models, data, designs and commercial terms, shared only under a signed non-disclosure agreement.
Protecting ideas protects people
- Methods, formulas, models or designs before their owners decide how to protect them. In South Africa, publishing an invention before a patent is filed can end the chance to patent it.
- Unpublished research data, or anything a university or funder owns.
- Partner, client, funder or individual names without written agreement.
- Accuracy figures, impact numbers or returns that have not passed the 95% gate.
- Children's names, faces or schools without consent.
The standards behind this page
- ALOODA white paper (UADS-WP-01): the decision loop and the 95% gate.
- Standards and governance: jurisdiction, the law we work within, and the standards we align with.
- The Uthando Safety Protocol: what we never publish about people.
- Privacy notice: how enquiries and personal information are handled.
