Schools as living classrooms
Aquaponics systems, sensors and teacher resources that turn schools into places to learn science, maths and enterprise.
Why it matters
Schools hold a community's next farmers, engineers and entrepreneurs, yet few have a working food system to learn from, or the support to keep one running.
What we are doing
Aquaponics systems, sensors and simple digital tools installed and supported in schools and community sites, with teacher resources, so the system becomes the setting for practical science, maths and enterprise. In 2026 this included a university-funded schools programme and a community aquaponics build due to be commissioned in October 2026.
Stage: Pilot work with schools in the Western Cape, with learning material in Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. Conversations in other African countries are exploratory, and no agreements there are claimed.
What the technology does
Described at the level of what it does, not how it is built. Methods, models and data stay private until their owners decide how to protect and share them.
- Aquaponics systems sized for schools, with water-quality sensing
- Teacher resources in Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa
- Offline-friendly learning tools for basic phones
- A shared record of each site's system, maintenance and learning activity
The ALOODA path for this programme
Every Uthando programme runs on the same standard operating procedure: six steps and a confidence gate before anything is acted on or published. Read the ALOODA white paper.
- AAttention
Schools want practical learning but lack working systems and support.
- LListening
Principals, teachers, learners and community hosts, in their own languages.
- OObserve
What a school can maintain, and which lessons a system genuinely supports.
- OOrient
Build only what the school can run, and teach in the learners' languages.
- DDecide
Install, train and support in partner schools before any expansion.
- 95The 95% gate
No outcome claim until learning and system records are verified.
- AAct
Run the pilots, record what works, and write the blueprint from the evidence.
From proof to scale, gate by gate
Nothing moves to the next stage until its gate is passed and evidenced. Honest about where it stands today.
Prove
Show that the problem is real and the approach works: research, a prototype, ethics approvals and first evidence.
Gate: The core claim passes the ALOODA 95% gate.
Pilot
Run it with real people in one setting, under a written agreement, against a baseline.
Gate: Pilot results are verified and every safeguard has worked in practice.
Blueprint
Write the model down so others can run it: the SOP, data standard, training, costs, legal checklist and licence terms.
Gate: An independent partner runs it from the blueprint alone.
Scale
Replicate through partners across sites and countries, under each country's law and with local consent.
Gate: A local compliance check passes before each new country.
Next gate for this programme: Verified pilot results, then a blueprint another region can run.
The rules this programme follows
- Children's information and images only with a parent or guardian's consent (POPIA sections 34 and 35) and the school's approval.
- Staff and volunteers who work with children checked against the Child Protection Register.
- Each community site run under a written agreement with its host.
- Partner institutions named only with their written approval.
